Moving to Vienna
Come and join us!
Vienna is a great place for science with a high density of excellent research institutions. It is also a place full of culture and recreation. This has been repeatedly attested by international studies which rank Vienna as the city with the highest quality of living (e.g. Global Livability Index 2023 by The Economist.
Moving always means registering with the authorities of your place of residence. Advice on which visa to apply for, as well as other details will be sent to you as part of your onboarding.
To further assist your emigration to Vienna, here comes a short list of things to organize (ideally before relocating to Vienna):
Things to organize beforehand
-
Mail – have your mail forwarded to your new address in Austria
-
Notify important public authorities of your new address. This goes for any online shopping profile as well (delivery and billing address).
During the move
-
Choose a reliable moving company instead of trying to move all your belongings yourself.
-
When bringing a pet animal to Austria, you must comply with a customs check or an examination by a border veterinarian.
Temporary Dorm Accommodation
-
There may be the option to rent a dorm room (single) or a small studio (if you arrive as a couple or family) in close vicinity to the university. This option is subject to availability and offered for up to 6 months to provide you time finding your own flat.
Living here on the longterm
-
You likely will need the following services upon arrival in Austria:
-
Electricity
-
Internet
-
Telephone (cell phones: check if your original provider offers service in Austria!)
-
TV/Radio
-
Bank account (A „Girokonto”)
Getting around
-
Are you bringing your car with you? – Will your driver’s license be valid in Austria?
-
Vienna is a city of rare opportunities to park your car. If your apartment rental does not include a parking space, maybe try to register for a permanent parking lot of a nearby garage.
-
Vienna runs a well-developed public transport system consisting of subway, suburban trains, tramways and buses – register for an annual ticket (“Jahresticket”) of the Wiener Linien
-
Vienna also offers rental bikes throughout the town.
Learning the Language
-
Vienna is an international melting pot with many expats. German is not a necessity in the lab nor in daily life such as in the supermarket. Yet, we think that it pays off to take German classes to dive deeper in the local culture.
